Washington: HSBC has announced the appointment of Ida Liu as Chief Executive Officer of HSBC Private Bank, effective January 5, 2026, succeeding Georges Elhedery, in a major leadership transition aimed at accelerating the bank’s global wealth management strategy.

The appointment marks a significant milestone as HSBC deepens its focus on serving the world’s fastest-growing population of ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) clients and strengthening its position across international wealth corridors.

Liu brings more than 25 years of global experience spanning wealth management, strategic advisory, and enterprise-wide transformation. HSBC said the leadership change reflects its ambition to expand the Private Bank into the preferred financial partner for the world’s most sophisticated entrepreneurs, families, and institutional clients.

In her new role, Liu will focus on deepening HSBC’s leadership with UHNW clients, enhancing cross-border connectivity across major global wealth corridors, and driving the continued expansion of HSBC Private Bank’s international franchise. She will report directly to Barry O’Byrne, Chief Executive Officer of HSBC International Wealth and Premier Banking.

“Ida brings deep expertise in strategic wealth advisory, operational transformation and business growth, with a consistent track record of delivering strong results,” O’Byrne said. “Her appointment underscores our commitment to positioning HSBC Private Bank as the partner of choice for the world’s most sophisticated entrepreneurs and families.”

Before joining HSBC, Liu served as Global Head of Citi Private Bank, overseeing a global business serving UHNW clients across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. She played a key role in advising clients on investment strategy, liquidity planning, intergenerational wealth transfer, and legacy solutions.

Liu began her career in investment banking, advising Fortune 500 companies on mergers, acquisitions, and capital markets strategy. More than half of her early career was spent in Asia, giving her deep understanding of emerging wealth markets and cross-border capital flows.
