NMCG and IWMI Explore Global Partnership for Sustainable River Management Under Namami Gange
New Delhi: The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) have come together to explore new avenues of collaboration aimed at strengthening sustainable river management and restoring healthier river ecosystems.
The dialogue focused on building global partnerships for healthier rivers by combining India’s on-ground experience under the Namami Gange Programme with international expertise in climate resilience and data-driven water governance.
Focus on Practical and Scalable Solutions
During the discussions, both sides emphasized the importance of translating knowledge into actionable and scalable solutions for river basin management. Key areas of potential collaboration include:
-
Advancing nature-based solutions for river rejuvenation
-
Strengthening faecal sludge and septage management systems
-
Pollution hotspot mapping to support natural farming practices
-
Leveraging digital twin technologies for smarter river basin planning and monitoring
By integrating scientific research, advanced data analytics and field-level implementation, the partnership aims to create long-term ecological and socio-economic benefits.
Strengthening Climate Resilience and Data-Driven Governance
The exchange also highlighted the growing need for climate-resilient water systems amid increasing environmental pressures. IWMI’s global experience in water management research, combined with NMCG’s large-scale implementation under the Namami Gange programme, is expected to support innovative approaches to river health monitoring and sustainable water resource management.
The proposed collaboration underscores a shared commitment to resilient rivers, healthier ecosystems and stronger communities. By fostering knowledge exchange and technical cooperation, both institutions aim to accelerate progress toward sustainable river basin governance in India and beyond.
