NCL Picks Up Production and Dispatch Pace as Monsoon Recedes
Kolkata, 9 September 2026: Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), a major coal-producing subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL), has sharply increased its operational pace as the monsoon loosens its grip.
As on 8 September 2026, NCL’s coal production rose by 67% and supplies by 75% compared with the average of 1–3 September 2026.

NCL coal production (FY 2026-27 till 8 Sept): 51.43 Million Tonnes (MT)

Rake loading on 8 September: 41 rakes (against average of 19 rakes per day during 1–3 September)
NCL’s major coal supplies are directed to power plants in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Measures Driving Recovery
With improved mine accessibility, NCL has:

Restored internal roads on priority to speed movement of coal to Coal Handling Plants and railway sidings

Continued intensive dewatering to reopen water-logged mining areas

Stepped up engagement with road-based consumers (especially power utilities) to increase tipper deployment

Strengthened coordination with project teams, railway officials and consumers for better supply-chain synchronisation
CIL-Level Improvement
At the Coal India level:

Average daily coal production rose 40% — from 1.36 MT per day (1–3 September) to 1.91 MT on 8 September 2026

Average daily despatches to the power sector rose 27% — from 1.37 MT per day to 1.74 MT on 8 September 2026
CIL stated that the improving trend in September provides a positive outlook, with coal supplies to power plants gradually moving towards pre-monsoon levels. NCL is intensifying efforts to maximise production and strengthen evacuation as weather conditions improve.
