NLCIL Commences bio mass co-firing operation in Barsingsar Thermal Power Station

In a step towards sustainability in thermal power generation and in line with the Ministry of Power (MoP) guidelines, NLC India Limited (NLCIL) has started bio-mass co-firing on a trial basis at its Lignite-based thermal power station, Barsingsar Thermal Power Station (BTPS- 2 X125 MW), in Rajasthan on 10th July 2024. Bio-Mass co-firing is being done for the first time in the country in a boiler with CFBC Technology of this scale.

Inaugurating the operation of co-firing, Chairman and Managing Director of NLCIL & Chairman NTPL, Shri. Prasanna Kumar Motupalli highlighted the benefits and importance of bio-mass co-firing in thermal power stations and the carbon credit the exercise is set to gain.

The stubble waste which would have been burnt without any usage will now be pelletized and blended with lignite for combustion in thermal power station. This step is set to reduce lignite consumption partially and utilize the waste bio-mass in a useful way.

This step is expected to have multiple benefits like reduction of bio-mass waste and reduction in lignite consumption in thermal power stations.

Additionally, the move will address the agriculture waste management issues in the country by utilizing the same in power generation.
