New Delhi: With another recurrence of past experiences, once again, the Public Enterprise Selection Board (PESB) has been unable to find any suitable candidate for the selection of the post of Director (Commercial), Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) (Schedule A).

The Board did not recommend any candidate for the post and advised the Administrative Ministry or Department to choose an appropriate course of further action for selection, including the Search cum Selection Committee (SCSC) or as deemed appropriate with the approval of the competent authority.

Earlier, also the Board has also raised hands in terms of major selections like NTPC CMD, BSNL CMD and NMDC Director (Finance) etc. The instances highlight a trend where PESB faces challenges in finding suitable candidates for top leadership roles.

Meanwhile, in time, NTPC CMD was not recommended by the PESB and the current CMD Shri Gurdeep Singh’s tenure is extended by one year till July 31, 2026. The extension was approved by the Appointment Committee of the cabinet.

The Director (Commercial) of Steel Authority of India Ltd, Srinivasa Chakravarthy Vejendla has assumed the charge on December 24, 2021. His tenure was completed on 30th June, 2025. Currently, Shri Ashok Kumar Panda who is also serving as Director (Finance) has been entrusted with the additional charge of Director (Commercial).

The Board has interviewed around 12 top officials for the post from the reputed organization like SAIL, NMDC Ltd, BHEL, Mecon Ltd, Odisha Mining Corporation Ltd, NTPC Ltd and RINL.
