GRID-INDIA, IIT Kharagpur Sign MoU to Strengthen Grid Stability as Renewables Rise
New Delhi: GRID-INDIA’s Northern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NRLDC) and IIT Kharagpur have signed an MoU for a research project focused on improving power-system stability as renewable and inverter-based resources increase.
The MoU was signed on September 3, 2026, by Sajan George, Executive Director, NRLDC, and Prof. Surjya Kanta Pal, Dean (R&D), IIT Kharagpur.

The project focuses on low Short-Circuit Ratio (SCR) power-system conditions.

It will develop tools for online inertia estimation and synthetic inertia assessment.

The study will cover both Grid-Forming (GFM) and Grid-Following (GFL) inverters.

Researchers will also evaluate protection algorithms under low-inertia and low-SCR conditions.

The work is aimed at addressing emerging grid stability challenges linked to renewable and inverter-based resources.
Why low-SCR matters
As the share of inverter-based renewable generation grows, maintaining stable grid operation becomes more challenging in areas with low system strength, commonly represented by a low SCR.
The project will therefore look at how available and synthetic inertia can be assessed across different SCR levels and how protection systems perform under these conditions.
Building a future-ready grid
The collaboration brings together GRID-INDIA’s grid-operation expertise and IIT Kharagpur’s research capabilities to develop practical tools for India’s evolving power system.
The work is expected to support better assessment of grid stability as the country integrates increasing levels of renewable energy and inverter-based generation.
