Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Lays Keel for ICG's First Next-Gen Patrol Vessel

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) has marked a key construction milestone, laying the keel for the Indian Coast Guard's first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (Y-16401) from a six-ship, Rs 1614.89 crore order.

MDL Lays Keel for First Next-Gen Offshore Patrol Vessel (Y-16401) for Indian Coast Guard

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), a Navratna DPSU, achieved the milestone of keel laying of 1st ship of 06 NGOPVs (Y-16401) for the Indian Coast Guard on 22 Jul 2025. DIG RH Nandodkar, TM, CSO(TECH)/ CGRHQ(NW) presided the Keel laying ceremony at Nhava Yard (NHY), MDL in the presence of Mr. A Vinod, Executive Director (Shipbuilding- MDL) along with senior officials from ICG, MDL and Classification society (ABS & IRS).

MDL has signed the contract with ICG to design, build and deliver six (06) Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels. The project is valued at Rs. 1614.89 crores. Each vessel is fitted with twin Controllable Pitch Propellers driven by 9000 kW Engines to meet contractual speed in excess of 23 knots and shall be classified under Dual Class (ABS & IRS).

The vessels will be designed as High Speed Craft under Class HSC rules. The vessel shall be used primarily for Coastal and Offshore Patrolling and Policing Maritime zones of India. The primary role also includes Fisheries Protection, Anti-Smuggling and Anti-Piracy, Search and Rescue operations, Ocean Surveillance and Monitoring of Sea lines of communication (SLOCs).

The vessel is scheduled for delivery in Jul 2027. Today’s Keel laying ceremony marks a significant milestone in the construction of the vessel by MDL.
