NTPC Secures Patent for Innovative Smart Access System Enhancing Electrical Switchgear Safety
New Delhi: In a significant milestone reinforcing its commitment to innovation and workplace safety, NTPC Limited has been granted a patent by the Government of India for its pioneering invention titled “A Method and a System for Accessing Electrical Breaker Modules.” The patent was granted on 15 June 2026 under Patent No. 592308. The patented technology introduces a smart access control system for electrical breakers in switchgear installations, seamlessly integrating with SAP and Permit-to-Work (PTW) systems to create a robust and intelligent safety framework for electrical maintenance operations.
Developed by NTPC engineers Shri Sandeep Kumar,DGM, CC (Solar), Shri Gnyanankur Sonowal,DGM (EMD), NTPC Bongaigaon and Shri Ashutosh Kumar, Sr. Manager (Operation), Farakka, the innovative solution employs multi-factor authentication and digital interlocking mechanisms to ensure only authorized personnel can access designated breaker modules. The system effectively prevents operational multiplicity and duplicity, enforces protection interlocks, and eliminates the risk of inadvertently isolating the wrong electrical equipment during maintenance activities.
By leveraging digital technologies and data-driven controls, the invention significantly enhances operational safety, minimizes human error, and strengthens compliance with established maintenance protocols. The successful development and patenting of this technology underscore NTPC’s focus on fostering innovation that directly contributes to safer and more reliable power plant operations.
The patent reflects NTPC’s continuous pursuit of technological excellence and indigenous innovation, further strengthening its position as a leading integrated power utility committed to operational excellence, digital transformation, and the highest standards of workplace safety.
As India’s largest integrated power utility, NTPC continues to drive innovation across its operations, developing solutions that enhance reliability, efficiency, sustainability, and safety while contributing to the nation’s energy security.
