SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant Begins ISO 14001:2015 EMS Re-Certification Audit
Rourkela, September 3, 2026: SAIL’s Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has started its ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System (EMS) re-certification audit, with the four-day assessment beginning on August 31, 2026.
The audit is being conducted by TÜV and covers the production and dispatch of primary, intermediate and finished steel products, along with associated support services.
What the audit will assess
TÜV auditors are reviewing the implementation and effectiveness of RSP’s environmental management system across multiple departments and facilities.
The assessment includes:

Compliance with applicable environmental laws and regulations

Environmental objectives and aspects

Environmental impacts and risk management
-
Emergency preparedness and response
-
Communication and procurement processes
-
Outsourced activities
-
EMS documentation
-
Follow-up on previous audit findings
The audit covers key facilities including Blast Furnaces, SMS-2, SP-3, New Plate Mill, Coke Ovens, Oxygen Plant, CPP-1, Special Plate Plant, HSM-2 and Water Management Department, among others.
Audit leadership and schedule
The opening meeting was chaired by Atish Chandra Sarkar, CGM In-Charge (Services), at the ED Works Conference Hall.
The TÜV assessment is being led by Prakash Kumar Samantaray, Lead Auditor, with Prabir Sengupta, Co-Auditor.
A night-shift audit at the Special Plate Plant is also part of the assessment. The process is scheduled to conclude on September 3 with a top management audit and closing meeting.
The audit is being coordinated by Anubinda Mohanty, GM [HR(L&D) & I/c BE], along with the Business Excellence team.
Why the ISO audit matters
The re-certification assessment provides an external check on how effectively RSP is implementing its environmental management system, including regulatory compliance, environmental objectives and preparedness for environmental risks.
